Contrasting Positions on Palestine in Canadian Politics

Paul Manly, the son of Jim Manly, an ordained minister of the United Church and prominent Palestinian rights activist, has won a byelection in British Colombia for the Green Party. He had originally sought the nomination for the NDP but was ousted due to his support for his father and his pro-Palestinian activism. Jim Manly was arrested in 2012 after trying to run the blockade of Gaza. Meanwhile, Conservative leader Andrew Sheer has pledged to move the Canadian Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem should he be elected, despite strong concerns raised by international observers that this undermines Palestinian claims to East Jerusalem and will hinder future progress towards peace.
