When our world is turned upside down as it has been with the COVID-19 restrictions, it is natural that our focus turns inward and our energy is taken up with just trying not to feel overwhelmed by all of the new things being asked of us. Staying connected to what is happening elsewhere is a gift for us, helping us to keep up our dreams and motivation alive for building a more just and peaceful world. In the words of Franciscan priest Richard Rohr: “We are in the midst of a highly teachable moment. We have a chance to go deep, and to go abroad. Globally, we’re in this together. Depth is being forced on us by great suffering, which always leads to great love.”
We know that we need to tap into a great love to assist people in understanding life under occupation, something that is unimaginable for most of us. Now is an opportunity to foster an authentic connection to the Palestinian people. It is no longer a stretch for us to understand imposed isolation, separation, losing our income overnight and living with little control in a future unknown.
